In my three decades of consulting, and observing numerous leaders, I have discovered a disturbing pattern. One way or the other, all too many leaders imagine that compromise is a vital virtue of leadership. This has probably come about because many leadership seminars and publications have addressed the need that leaders should kind a consensus, so as to get things accomplished. While that is unfortunately true, leaders who compromise on each factor are not leaders!

Management requires understanding when to compromise, and when to "battle for one's beliefs." A real leader should not, and cannot compromise on everything. While it is true that leaders should "choose and select their battles," that is far different than "folding like an affordable suitcase."

One lesson I routinely educate throughout my leadership training applications is that leaders must learn to set priorities. They need to prioritize what and once they wish to get sure things carried out and achieved, and what is an important central core or theme to their agenda. It's unattainable to really lead without creating targets that one wants to accomplish. This means creating priorities, in addition to creating an efficient motion plan, to successfully accomplish those goals.

Many individuals in leadership positions by no means set priorities or create a list of goals. They "rule from crisis to crisis," and rarely accomplish much. In most cases, when these individuals lead, a company is lucky if it "treads water" throughout their tenure, quite than fall back.
