PRINCE2 Business Cases

The most important set of information on a PRINCE2 project is the Business Case. Why is it then that so many projects start, continue and end without ever having a current and up to date Business Case? The answer lies in the concern that many project managers have about the content, detail and accuracy of the information they will base the document on.

So, let's get back to the fundamentals of the PRINCE2 Business Case. The Business Case is the most important set of information in the PRINCE2 project because it is the only document that explains why we are delivering the products that are the focus of the project. It aligns this delivery with the corporate or programme strategy and describes the impact that the product will have on the corporate organisation or programme when the product is used.

The Business Case is live - it should be checked at the start, during and at the end of the project, and it should be modified as and when required. The Business Case is live because the project and the wider world are live and ever changing. It is widely accepted that projects which fail to understand that the PRINCE2 Business Case is live will deliver poor returns to the organisation.

The Business Case is owned by the Project Executive in PRINCE2 projects, with the Project Manager charged with maintaining it, subject to Change Control, throughout the life of the project.

When participating in aPRINCE2 Training London, delegates are made aware of the importance of the Business Case to the PRINCE2 project, and work towards better understanding it both for the exams that are taken during the course, and for the project management roles that they perform back at the office.

The Business Case documents the business justification for the PRINCE2 project. Projects without a sound Business Case should prepare for trouble throughout the life cycle.!

PRINCE2 is a Registered Trademark of the Office of Government Commerce in the UK and other countries.
